Published on the occasion of the exhibtion that which frightens us, this essay offers a curatorial reading through the works of David Correa, Genesis Moreno, Richard Moreno, and Luna Palazzolo-Daboul. Moving nonlinearly through catastrophe, ritual, and witness, the text approaches the exhibition as a sequence of thresholds rather than explanations, tracing how fear, belief, and presence circulate among objects, histories, and bodies. Written through the curators’ shared lens, the essay lingers in moments where meaning resists articulation and thought is compelled to begin. The publication includes installation images and reproductions of select artworks, extending the encounter beyond the gallery space.

Primary (Est. 2007) is a context and research-driven curatorial collective with an emphasis on public art. We thrive amongst the self-taught, working-class misfits, who explore the margins of a new Americana through pungent, human-focused narratives. Our program engages with the raw and uncanny, celebrating border voices, bootleg culture, and intergenerational commentary, connecting the new and unseen with broader audiences and evolving collections.
