TYPOE

"It is the moment of destruction when stones tumble, and blocks collide, when recognizable forms collapse, when old, and perhaps boring ideas totter and apparent chaos ensues, that allows children to refocus and become innovators again." - Karen Hewitt

Primary is proud to present DIE FORM, a solo exhibition of new sculptural works by the Miami-based artist TYPOE, his first exhibition with the gallery.

The instinct to align and stack objects transpire in the first 18 months of life. With the discovery of building blocks, the child utilizes essential educational tools that contribute to their overall development. The grasping of balance, working through failure and finding the determination to redesign and modify all become cornerstones to any individual's evolution.

In DIE FORM, Typoe has adopted, adapted, and built upon tools originally designed by educators Friedrich Fröbel, Maria Montessori, and creatives like Alma Siedhoff-Buscher.
The Bauhaus Building Block Set and Froebel's Gifts continue to inspire Typoe's visual language. However, his growing catalog of icons, recognizable shapes, and tropical color configurations allow the artist to convey a more personal illumination and reflect on the fragility of life.

"In building DIE FORM, I became interested in the balance of light and how it can drastically affect the color. The internal light allows the work to have a dual existence, a dormant state balanced against a living activation. Both modest and bold, balancing the outward appearance of the work with its inward significance."

Alma Siedhoff-Buscher explains, "Children should have a space where they can be what they want. Everything in it belongs to them – their imagination shapes it".

For Typoe, DIE FORM is this space. He is both director and worker, designer and structural engineer, artist and critic. His minimalist forms can be assembled into infinite combinations, grow over time, advising on creative new ways to construct and understand the world beyond.
